Unleash Your Creativity with Festive Scenes and Unique Displays
Starting around Halloween, I begin to think about Christmas decorating. I spend hours getting ideas to see what I can do with what I have, and what I may need to purchase this year.
I then take those ideas and design my decorations around the style of our home, the size of the space I have available (I am a maximalist) and the decorations and household items that I have.
My favorite decorating ideas are small vignettes that will fit into any space, whether it is the kitchen, on a coffee table or even the bathroom. I like to spread the joy throughout my home.
Dudley and I both love having our home reflect the warm ambiance of the season, so we start the day after Thanksgiving.
Once Dudley brings in all the boxes from the upstairs of our barn, I get started organizing. First I take the small items such as tiny trees, holiday picks, ornaments, etc., and place in one pile.
Then I gather the household items needed, such as, pedestal plates, antique sugar bowl and milk pitcher, Christmas platters, vintage metal card file drawers and old sewing machine drawers.
,Now the fun begins. Take a pedestal plate and create a scene then layer in holiday picks, if needed to create a finished vignette. This can be done on plates with or without the pedestal.
Do whatever you want. There are no rules. Anything unique to hold a few items will make a lovely holiday scene. This makes it personal to you and your collection of vintage, antique or even new items.
You can even decorate with vintage suitcases.
Once you get the hang of it, you can move on to tabletops, dressers and mantle pieces.
Layer on white netting for a snow affect. Place lights underneath to create a glow.
A scene can even be created in a jar!
Or an old tool box.
My personal favorite, a winter scene on a dresser, holds a special place in my heart, featuring an amazing Father Christmas crafted by my mother. I love to see him tucked into this winter scene in my front hall.
The sky is the limit. Most of the picks and decorations I have come from the discount stores. Mix in some nicer items and no one will ever know.
The important thing is to just have fun!
Note:
As a tip from years of experience, I organize all my vignettes by rooms as I packed them away so that I can take each box to the appropriate room. Inside the box is a note to remind me what items I need to pull together to repeat that vignette if I so desire. This ensures that next year’s decorating spree is equally joyful and stress-free.
